Formed in 2014 by Nick Stanger with the independently recorded debut Vacant (Avantgarde Music), Ashbringer quickly evolved from a solo project into a full live band. With the addition of members to support touring across the United States and Canada, the project’s vision expanded into something far greater than its beginnings.
Follow-up releases Yūgen (2016, Avantgarde/Vendetta) and Absolution (2019, Prosthetic) further cemented Ashbringer’s reputation as one of the most forward-thinking acts in the American black metal underground. The band’s kaleidoscopic sound blends black metal, post-rock, folk, ambient, and noise, offering listeners an expansive and immersive journey that transcends genre conventions.
Now with a solidified lineup, Ashbringer continues to push the boundaries of atmosphere and heaviness. Their music thrives on contrasts—harsh yet melodic, chaotic yet introspective—resulting in records that are as emotionally evocative as they are sonically powerful.
The latest chapter, We Came Here to Grieve, showcases the band at their most experimental yet accessible, weaving together dense soundscapes and heartfelt expression into something uniquely their own.

Ashbringer’s mission has always been clear: to create music that challenges, transforms, and resonates deeply with those who hear it.
