Ashbringer was established in 2014 by Nick Stanger with the solo-recorded debut LP Vacant (Avantgarde Music). The project was soon expanded into a full band to tour the United States and Canada. Subsequent releases Yūgen (2016, Avantgarde Music, Vendetta) and Absolution (2019, Prosthetic) further expanded on their kaleidoscopic sound, combining elements of black metal, post-rock, folk, noise and ambient music.

With their lineup now fully solidified, Ashbringer continue to evolve into a sound uniquely their own, drawing from an expansive palette to craft their most experimental yet accessible release to date: We Came Here To Grieve.

We Came Here to Grieve

(2023, Ind., Translation Loss, nothingspace records)

We Came Here to Grieve is heavy on the aggressive, atmospheric black metal but songs like “Pages”and “Gaze” incorporate more rock-style song structures and clean singing, while “Rift” explores noise and ambient soundscapes, creating almost cinematic layers of sound over the angular black metal. - Decibel Magazine

The raw emotion captured by all the vocalists and instrumentalists alike creates such an enthralling, visceral experience as the intensity continues to build and build. - Everything Is Noise

The raw emotion captured by all the vocalists and instrumentalists alike creates such an enthralling, visceral experience as the intensity continues to build and build. - Everything Is Noise

Every bit as charming and unique as Absolution, We Came Here to Grieve is arguably even more experimental and takes far more risks. (4/5) - Angry Metal Guy

Latest Release: In-Studio Performance

While recording their upcoming fourth studio album, Ashbringer recorded an in-studio performance of existing material played on their most recent east-coast tour featuring their up-to-date lineup.

Absolution

(2019, Prosthetic Records)

Absolution is a brilliant record. Whilst retaining elements of the folky, experimental black metal feel that defined Vacant, Ashbringer have piled on the melody and a post-something vibe, infusing other elements besides. (4/5) - Angry Metal Guy

Ashbringer have torn up the rulebook once more, and fabricated a record that demands attention. All we can do is sit back, enjoy it’s encapsulating content, and applaud. (9/10) - Distorted Sound Mag

Yūgen

(2016, Avant Garde Music, Vendetta)

Everything about Ashbringer feels very natural and real. The album create some stunning moments, but does not fall into any trap of focusing on one thing too much, other than making good music. (9/10) - Metal Observer

This is one of these rare records able to connect at an almost subconscious level. (7/10) - Rock Music Raider

Vacant

(2014, Ind., Avant Garde Music)

At times it's uncompromisingly harsh and in other parts it’s beautifully simplistic and evocative. (8/10) Maximum Volume Music

Everything about it is simply beautiful to the ear. Being able to make the listener feel chilled out and then pumped with anticipation is quite an achievement not many bands are capable of. (5/5) Metal-Rules
